• Social Studies Databases
    The following are databases that you can use to find information for your social studies projects and papers.  Some databases contain primary sources as well as links to full-text journal articles, maps, images, and electronic books.  All require a login and password for home use, please sign into the NPHS/MS website and select Research Pathfinders to find a list of logins and passwords. Farther down the list, you will find find links to websites that provide access to historical periodicals, primary documents, maps and other resources for social studies.
     
    ABC-CLIO Social Studies Databases -Topical overviews, biographies, thematic essays and thousands of primary and secondary sources on American history and government and modern world history.  Includes film clips, photographs, and other visual materials.  Also features analysis of current events.  (primary sources)

    American Heritage- Archived contents of American Heritage and Technology & Invention Magazines. American Heritage currently has last twenty years, back to 1988. Technology & Invention has issues back to 1985. Use Search Box to locate articles by topic key word.

    Annals of American History Online - Scope covers United States from 1493 to the present.  Includes primary sources such as speeches, essays, landmark court decisions, and editorials as well as biographical information. (primary sources)
     
    Biography Reference Center Offers a comprehensive collection of full-text biographies supporting history, science, the arts, music, literature, multicultural studies, gender studies, business, government & politics, sports, entertainment and many other areas. This database features more than 177,000 full-text biographies from many different sources.
     
    Country Studies  This website contains the on-line versions of books previously published in hard copy by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress as part of the Country Studies/Area Handbook Series sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Army between 1986 and 1998. Each study offers a comprehensive description and analysis of the country or region's historical setting, geography, society, economy, political system, and foreign policy. 

    CountryWatch  Up-to-date news and a wide variety of political, economic and social information on each of the recognized countries of the world for high school and college students. Includes Country Watch Youth for grades 5-9.

    Biography Reference Center Offers a comprehensive collection of full-text biographies supporting history, science, the arts, music, literature, multicultural studies, gender studies, business, government & politics, sports, entertainment and many other areas. This database features more than 177,000 full-text biographies from many different sources.
    Points of View Reference Center provides 200 topics, each with an overview (objective background/description), point (argument) and counterpoint (opposing argument). Includes Critical Thinking Guides for each of the topics. This database contains a balance of materials from all viewpoints, including the main essays, leading political magazines from both sides of the aisle, newspapers, radio & TV news transcripts, primary source documents and reference books.
    History Reference Center:  provides history articles from online magazines, eBooks, newspaper, and primary sources.

    Gale History Resources:  Search the Gale Virtual Reference Center for Social Studies eBooks, Discovering Collection - U.S. and World History, Custom Newspapers, Global Issues in Context a new database that offers international viewpoints on a broad spectrum of global issues, topics, and current events and Opposing Viewpoints Database,

    Infobase eBooks:  History and Language Arts eBooks for middle school and high school research.
     
    Proquest K-12 Social Studies Resources:  We subscribe to several Proquest Databases that can be used for Social Studies:   History Study Center, New York Times Historical Newspapers(from 1851 – December, 2004) and SIRS Knowledge Source. (primary sources:  History Study Center & NY Times Historical)

    Safari Montage Video on Demand  This link is for home access only.  Use the link under Favorites when accessing Safari in school.  Use district login and password to access video files.  Search by topic or browse under subject for relevant video clips.

    Portals to the World   Library of Congress website that contains selective links providing authoritative, in-depth information about the nations and other areas of the world. They are arranged by country or area with the links for each sorted into a wide range of broad categories.
    Chronicling America  This site allows you to search and view newspaper pages from 1880-1922 and find information about American newspapers published between 1690-present. Chronicling America is sponsored jointly by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).
