Our first unit will focus on the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. The novel is historical fiction. It tells the story of Salva Dut and Nya. Two children in Sudan, but in different time periods. Nya struggles to bring water to her family every day in 2008 Sudan. Salva is a "lost boy" refugee, escaping from the rebel forces of 1985 Sudan. Throughout the unit, we will learn many Common Core skills that will help us become better readers and writers. Students will learn how to summarize, including a clear beginning, middle, and end. Students will also examine non-fiction texts, analyzing how they contribute to their understanding of the fictional narrative.
