With the New Jersey adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), mathematics instruction, and the resulting assessment, has taken on a new look.  The new standards are organized around big ideas and are designed to facilitate a deeper understanding of math at each grade level.

The big ideas for Kindergarten through Grade 2 are place value and the number 10. For Grades 3-5, the big ideas rest with fractions, their meanings and operations, and multiplication and division of whole numbers. For Grades 6-8, the standards focus on algebraic thinking, ratio and proportion, probability and statistics, and multi-digit decimal operations. In addition,  the new standards include the incorporation of 8 mathematical practices representing how these standards should be taught.

In order to prepare students for the new standards math teachers at the elementary schools have started incorporating the ‘Go Math’ program, a program specifically designed around the CCSS. The program contains many real world applications and involves online components that emphasize active involvement, differentiation, enrichment, and on-going assessments. These include Carmen Sandiego detective activities, Secret Millionaires Club (financial literacy), Grab ‘n Go Kits, new math boards, and Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) devoted to problem solving strategies. Students are also actively encouraged to demonstrate their understanding by writing throughout the program, and they also have the ability to log in at home for easy access to assignments and the student edition.

Overall this comprehensive program emphasizes a deeper and more complete understanding of math. Thank you to everyone involved in piloting, developing and implementing the new program.
