New Providence Middle School has received the distinguished award of being chosen a Positive Behavior Support in Schools (PBSIS) Model School by the New Jersey Department of Education–Office of Special Education, in collaboration with The Elizabeth M. Boggs Center, UMDNJ – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

According to the PBSIS website the program is a "data driven, tiered system of positive behavior support that provides training and technical assistance for developing and implementing a three tiered intervention approach" to behavioral issues. The program also assists schools with" building the capacity for inclusion of students with disabilities and challenging behavior within general education settings by creating school-wide positive learning environments for all students and specific interventions for students with more intensive needs".
