To New Providence High/Middle School Community,

As we have settled into the second week of Online Learning, the administration is thankful to have heard from many of our parents and students about how the new experience is going.  We likewise have had time to collaborate with our teachers to continue to find what will best meet the needs of our students academically, socially and emotionally. Both students and teachers have been working restlessly to adapt to a new schedule academically, while personally grappling with individual circumstances in their homes.  Thank you to our students and teachers for staying committed to excellence in education as we experience these uncertain times.

During our conversations with our teachers, we have encouraged them to connect with students academically and have urged them not to be as focused on delivering the curriculum in its entirety.  We have always tried first and foremost to do what's best for our students and at this unprecedented time of upheaval and uncertainty, we understand that students need support and interactions with their teachers and peers to feel connected and grounded.  At this time, there is no great clarity on where our present situation will take us, so it’s natural for teachers and students to come to the realization that some assignments are no longer feasible and some expectations are no longer reasonable in our online learning environment.  This has already posed as a challenge for students, teachers, administrators and parents alike, but as a school community we must unify to find what is appropriate and best for our students. As we remain committed to providing the most appropriate online learning environment for our students, we as educators will remain flexible and fluid in how we achieve this and we ask that our parents and students partner with us.  Below there is pertinent information as we progress forward with online learning.  I ask you to read it through in its entirety and take time to digest it. Please email the administration with any questions or comments as we welcome your feedback.

    Zoom Video Conferencing

Last night, the Zoom app was deployed to all student iPads, 7-12.  We have asked our teachers for the remainder of the week to experiment with Zoom video conferencing to connect with your students, more from a social-emotional perspective than anything else.  The full implementation of Zoom video conferencing during the colored (Green, White, and Gold) schedule days, (schedule below) will begin next Monday, March 30th. Zoom video conferencing cannot be recorded by either the teacher or the students.  Students will be held accountable for appropriate behavior with the use of Zoom video conferencing. We are following our student Code of Conduct during Online Learning.

    Change in Schedule

After much discussion and feedback from teachers, students, and parents, we have decided that during online learning, we will change our schedule beginning on March 30, 2020.  For the remainder of this week, March 23- 27, 2020, teachers and students will be expected to follow the Rotating and Drop Schedule (HS) and Regular Bell Schedule (MS) for the purpose of assigning assignments and student completion of work.

Beginning Monday, March 30, 2020, we will shift our schedule out of the Rotating and Drop Schedule (HS) and Regular Bell Schedule (MS).

    1. We will have colored Green, White, and Gold days to represent the period class schedule, professional period and assignment/collection of work.  We are hopeful that this will assist in better managing the workload for teachers and students.
    2. These period class times will also represent Professional Period, so that teachers and students can connect when needed through Zoom video conferencing as an added resource to online teaching and learning.

    Due Dates/Times/No Homework Weekends

We will change the due dates/times of assignments (beginning Monday, March 30th) as well as establish NO HOMEWORK weekends (beginning this Friday, March 27th) moving forward.  Teachers have full autonomy in choosing their due dates, Monday - Friday, for assignments.  We will adjust the assignment due time to 4:00 p.m. daily, in an effort to reduce the stress for students and teachers feeling that they are working from morning until night.  As we adjust to our new schedule, we cannot stress enough the importance of “turning off” and having quality time with your family as well as giving yourself a mental health break during down times.

On Green and White days, the Professional Period will be used as an added resource for teachers to meet with their class/students via Zoom video conferencing during the scheduled class period time. On Gold days, students may request to schedule a Zoom video conference with their teacher to obtain clarification or extra help on an assignment.
