    Hi 4th Graders,

    Listed below you will find assignments to complete while you are learning at home. I sent home a large envelope with each of you that contains materials you'll need for the next few weeks. Can't find it? Here is a copy of the writing activities and the reading activities as well as the instruction letter on top.

    Week 13 Assignments (June 8th - 12th)

    It's our last week of school! Can you believe it?

    Before we break for the summer, I'd like to meet with you on Zoom two times this week. Please see below!

    Day 1

    * Please attend ONE of the following Zoom sessions.

    We will do a few more reading and writing activities together, so this will count towards your day 1 activity for both reading & writing:

      Tuesday 12:30 - 1:00    OR     Wednesday 12:30 - 1:00

    * You will find the Zoom meeting id and password on the document called "LA Check-in with Mrs. K" in your Google Drive account. I will also email your parents the information. Can't wait to see you!

    Day 2

    * Please attend ONE of the following Zoom sessions.

    I would like to review a few resources that you can use over the summer to keep your skills sharp for 5th grade! This will count towards your day 2 activity for both reading & writing:

      Thursday 12:30 - 1:00    OR     Friday 11:30 - 12:00

    * You will find the Zoom meeting id and password on the document called "LA Check-in with Mrs. K" in your Google Drive account. I will also email your parents the information. This will be the last time I see you before you become 5th graders!

      • First, watch this video on pronouns!
      • Then, practice here and here.
      • Lastly, please complete pg. 17, "Writing Connections: Pronouns" in the writing activity packet. (If you can't find that packet, there's a copy of it at the top of the page.) Please email pg. 17 to me at jkaufmann@npsdnj.org so I can see how you did!
    • Reading Activity: 
      • Practice Using Context Clues - Please watch this video for a great review of using context clues!
      • Next, please read the text in the packet, "How Shocking."
      • Then, answer the questions on pages 55 & 56. Please type in your answers onto the Google Doc that I've shared with you. (Remember, click on the "Shared with me" tab in Google Drive.)

    Week 11 Assignments (May 26th - 29th)

    Day 1

      • Lastly, please complete this worksheet. You can print it out, complete it, and take a picture of it. (If you're printer isn't working, take a screenshot of it, and use the tools to complete it. Save it to your photos.) Then, please email it to me at jkaufmann@npsdnj.org so I can see how you did!

    • If you have finished last week's assignment "Learning About Braille," please practice using context clues here:
      • First, watch this short video on context clues here!
      • Then, practice using context clue to determine a word's meaning here!
    • If you have not completed this activity from last week, please complete it:

      • Next, please read the text in the packet, "Learning About Braille."

    Week 10 Assignments (May 18th - 22nd)

      • Then, practice here.
      • Lastly, please complete this worksheet. You can print it out, complete it, and take a picture of it.     • Then, please check the document I share with you called, "LA Check-in with Mrs. K" in your Google Drive account. You'll find a note from me with an assignment or two you can catch up on today. 
    • Have you finished all of your assignments already?
      • If so, please complete the writing activity and choose 1 reading activity from the list below:
      • Writing Activity:
        • Please print (or take a screenshot of) this worksheet reviewing simple, compound, and complex sentences. Please complete it.
        • Do you need a review? You can rewatch these three short videos on simplecompound, and complex sentences again!
        • You can check your answers on page 2.

      • Next, please reread the text in the packet, "Go for the Goal."

      • Subject-Verb Agreement - First, watch this short video I created about subject-verb agreement in sentences.
      • Then, let's do a little practice. Please complete pgs. 27 & 29 in the "Writing Activities for Mrs. Kaufmann's Class" packet.
      • Next, check your answers to pg. 27 & pg. 29
    • Reading Activity: 
      • Cause & Effect Practice - Check out this video for a great explanation of cause and effect!
      • Next, practice matching causes and effects on this website! Be sure to read the passages carefully and refer back to them when answering the questions. (After ten practice questions, you may get a message that reads, "You have reached your daily practice limit. Become a member for unlimited practice." You do not need to become a member. 10 practice questions is plenty!)  

    Day 2

    Week 6 Assignments (April 20th - April 24th):

      • Sentence Practice: Let's do a little more practice with simple, compound, and complex sentences. Would you like a quick review?
      • First, watch this video message. 
      • Then, watch these three short videos on simplecompound, and complex sentences featuring my kids!
      • Last, please complete this short page to show me what you know about sentences! It'll be sent directly to me so I can see how you're doing!
    • Reading Activity: 
      • Main Idea Review - Check out this video for a great review on main idea!
      • Next, practice selecting the main idea in this fun lightning game! (Please do at least 15 questions!) 

    Day 2

    • First, check the Google Doc I shared with you (look at the "Shared with me" tab) for comments and make any changes that I've asked you to make. 
    • Lexia:
      •  Log onto Lexia and complete another 3 units (or at least 15 minutes). Please see my instruction letter (on top) for login information.
    • Writing Activity: 
      • Sentence Practice: We're going to do one more day of sentence practice! Today you are going to use all your knowledge about simple, compound, and complex sentences to write different types of sentences.
      • Would you like a quick review? You can rewatch these three short videos on simplecompound, and complex sentences again!
      • Then, please complete this short page to show me what you know about simple, compound, and complex sentences. This form will also be sent to me so I can see how you're doing!
    • Reading Activity: 
      • Main Idea Check - Please read the text in the packet, "Dear Mr. Mike"
      • Then, answer the questions on pages 55 & 56.
      • Please type in your answers onto the Google Doc that I've shared with you. (Remember, click on the "Shared with me" tab in Google Drive to find the document.)  

    Week 5 Assignments (April 13th - April 17th):

    * If you did not get to all the assignments during week 4 (because of all of our spring break), please go back to week 4 and complete them first.

    Day 1

    • First, check the Google Doc I shared with you (look at the "Shared with me" tab) for comments and make any changes that I've asked you to make. 
    • Lexia: Log onto Lexia and complete another 3 units (or at least 15 minutes). Please see my instruction letter (on top) for login information.
    • Writing Activity: Today you are going use all your knowledge about simple, compound, and complex sentences to write different types of sentences. Would you like a quick review? Check out this video! Then, please complete this page to show me what you know about simple, compound, and complex sentences.
    • Reading Activity: Practice selecting the main idea that ties details together on this website. As always, remember to read carefully and think about what sentence MUST be true based upon ALL of the details. (After ten practice questions, you may get a message that reads, "You have reached your daily practice limit. Become a member for unlimited practice." You do not need to become a member. 10 practice questions is plenty!) 

    Day 2 (Please do only if you finished the Week 4 assignments and the Week 5, Day 1 assignment)

    • Writing Activity: Click on this website for some extra practice identifying simple, compound, and complex sentences. Can't remember the difference between the three? Click here for a review!
    • Reading Activity: Practice reading short passages and selecting the main idea here. As always, remember to read carefully! Think about which sentence BEST captures what the whole passage is about. (After ten practice questions, you may get a message that reads, "You have reached your daily practice limit. Become a member for unlimited practice." You do not need to become a member. 10 practice questions is plenty!) 

    Week 4 Assignments (April 6th - April 10th):

    Day 1

    • Writing Activity: Do you remember learning about independent & dependent clauses last week? We'll use that information this week to learn about complex sentences.

      • Next, click here to watch a more professional video that reviews simple, compound, and complex sentences.
      • Last, click on this website for some practice identifying complex setences.
    • Reading Activity: Please read the story in the packet, "Therapy Dogs." Then, answer the questions on page 10 & 11. Please type in your answers onto the Google Doc that I've shared with you. (Remember, click on the "Shared with me" tab in Google Drive.) 

    Day 2 

    • Lexia: Log onto Lexia and complete another 3 units (or at least 15 minutes). Please see my instruction letter (on top) for login information.

    • Reading Activity: Please re-read the first story in the packet, "Therapy Dogs." Then, answer the questions on page 12. Please use complete sentences. I would like you to type in your answers onto the same Google Doc that I've shared with you. (Remember to click on the "Shared with me" tab in Google Drive.) This way, I can check in again to see how you're doing!

    • Writing Activity: Do you remember learning about sentence fragments? We talked about different types of clauses then, but let's brush up on our knowledge of independent & dependent clauses. (We'll need this information when we learn about complex sentences next week.) Check out this video. Next, practice what you've learned about independent & dependent clauses here.
    • Reading Activity: Please read the story in the packet, "A Bridge to the Future." Then, answer the questions on page 55 & 56. Please type in your answers onto the Google Doc that I've shared with you. (Remember, click on the "Shared with me" tab in Google Drive.) 

    Day 2 

    • Lexia: Log onto Lexia and complete another 4 units (or at least 20 minutes). Please see my instruction letter (on top) for login information.
    • Writing Activity: Click on this website and this one too for some extra practice in independent and dependent clauses.
    • Reading Activity: Practice making inferences about what might happen next on this website. As always, remember to read carefully and use your own background knowledge along with the clues in the text to make an inference. (After ten practice questions, you may get a message that reads, "You have reached your daily practice limit. Become a member for unlimited practice." You do not need to become a member. 10 practice questions is plenty!)

    Here are some additional activities that you can complete:

    Day 1

    • First, check the Google Doc I shared with you (look at the "Shared with me" tab) for comments and make any changes that I've asked you to make. 
    • Lexia: Log onto Lexia and complete another 4 units (or at least 20 minutes). Please see my instruction letter (on top) for login information.
    • Writing Activity: Check out this website for some extra practice on simple sentences and compound sentences! Remember: Simple sentences have one subject, one predicate, and express a single thought. A compound sentences has 2 simple sentences joined by a comma and a conjunction.
    • Reading Activity: Practice making inferences on this website. Remember to read carefully and use your own background knowledge along with the clues in the text to make an inference. (After ten practice questions, you may get a message that reads, "You have reached your daily practice limit. Become a member for unlimited practice." You do not need to become a member. 10 practice questions is plenty!) 

    Day 2 

    • Lexia: Log onto Lexia and complete another 4 units (or at least 20 minutes). Please see my instruction letter (on top) for login information.
    • Writing Activity: Click on this website and this one too for some extra practice on using conjunctions in sentences. 
    • Reading Activity: Practice making inferences about characters on this website. As always, remember to read carefully and use your own background knowledge along with the clues in the text to make an inference. (Again, after ten practice questions, you may get a message that reads, "You have reached your daily practice limit. Become a member for unlimited practice." You do not need to become a member. 10 practice questions is plenty!) 

    Week 1 Assignments (March 17th - 20th):

    Day 1 and Day 2 assignments are due by Friday (3/27) at 3:00pm

    Day 1 

    • Lexia: Log onto Lexia and complete 4 units (or at least 20 minutes). Please see my instruction letter (on top) for login information.
    • Writing Activity: Please complete the first two pages in the writing packet on conjunctions (both are labeled pg. 33 at the bottom). Hint: Remember that conjunctions are connecting words that connect two simple sentences together to make a compound sentence! I will check this when we return to school.
    • Reading Activity: Please read the first story in the packet, "Mouse at the Movies." Then, answer the questions at the bottom of page 42 & on page 43 only. I would like you to type in your answers onto a Google Doc that I've shared with you. (Click on the "Shared with me" tab in Google Drive.) This way, I can check in to see how you're doing!

     Day 2

    • Lexia: Log onto Lexia and complete 2 units (or at least 10 minutes). Please see my instruction letter (on top) for login information.
    • Writing Activity: Please complete pg. 37 in the writing packet on simple & compound sentences. I will check this when we return to school.
    • Reading Activity: Please re-read the first story in the packet, "Mouse at the Movies." Then, answer the questions on page 44. Please use complete sentences. I would like you to type in your answers onto the same Google Doc that I've shared with you. (Click on the "Shared with me" tab in Google Drive.) This way, I can check in again to see how you're doing!
